According to a report on Radio Fiji, the Agriculture Permanent Secretary Col Mason Smith said the deal was in line with the government's plans to cut the country's imnports of dairy products.

“As you all know government policies is to reduce the importation of food stuff from overseas. One of the fundamental areas that we are striving for is beef sufficiency in the dairy and beef industry. Plans were laid last year for the importation of the livestock,” he told the raido station.

The authorities have spent approximately $1.3 million on the cattle deal, which includes the upgrading of the Koronivia Research Station to accommodate the livestock.

The imported cattle will replace those that died of Brusellosis and during floods last year.
