The cows have a high fertility rate, producing one calf every year. But to further increase the productivity of their cattle, Balinese farmers have introduced simple animal husbandry practices, such as controlled mating.

There is a growing demand for beef across the country and the quality of Bali beef is very good."That's why many other regional administrations and a number of other countries have expressed interest in raising Bali cattle. But the Balinese provincial administration strives to maintain the purity of the breed, preventing Bali cattle semen from being exported," said Frans Siung, a spokesman for the Bali Livestock Husbandry.

Bali Governor Dewa Made Beratha underlined in a meeting with farmers in Tabanan recently the importance of maintaining the unique traits of the Bali cattle breed, which is one of four cattle breeds that are indigenous to the country.

"Bali cattle should only be found in Bali," Beratha said, reminding farmers not to sell cows of calving age, but only "non-productive" cattle.
