Belarus - Higher Milk Purchase Prices.

The new purchase price for a ton of premium quality milk is BYR480,000 (USD 223), as compared with BYR435,000 (USD202) previously. The price paid for a ton of first class milk has increased from BYR400,000 (USD186) to BYR440,000 (USD204), and for a ton of second class milk from BYR250,000 (USD116) to BYR270,000 (USD125).

A Ministry of Agriculture official said the new purchase prices should improve the economic fortunes of milk producers and dairies. The higher prices will also encourage dairy companies to produce more premium quality milk. Estimates by the Ministry of Agriculture are that the higher prices will result in BYR30 billion (USD13.9 million) in additional profits for dairy companies by the end of this year.

The government previously raised milk purchase prices by 5 per cent both in January and September this year. Retail milk prices in Belarus are not expected to show any major increase because the government fixes the price ceiling.
