![]() We have a 3 year old Santa Gertrudis Bull. He's been acting like he doesn't feel well for a little over a month.
Five days ago, he developed a basketball size protrusion from his lower right side. I researched online and the only thing I came up with was hemoragic bowel syndrome or "bloody gut". IF it were that.. he'd already be dead. He hasn't pooped in three days. Today we're going to attempt an enema and see if there might be a resolution by doing that. He's eating hay and a little feed . I haven't seen him drink anything, but that doesn't mean he isn't drinking.. I just haven't seen it. Anyone have any ideas?? OH.. we've been giving him mineral oil for the past three days too. |

![]() Hi Nantz,
Sounds like either a 'displacement' or else an abscess, either way it needs some experienced person to take a look. Good luck ! Jon |

![]() We did call the vet.. it was a cyst. He lanced it and drained it. It's back and the bull is now having difficulty walking or being on his feet for any stretch of time. I ordered a "Pole Syringe" today and intend to start him on antibiotics in a couple of days before I attempt to get him in the pen to try to lance it myself this time.
Oh.. the enema?? ... Have you ever witnessed a whale's blow hole in action? .. That's what it looked like when the enema took affect. The problem was that we were giving the bull antibiotics in his feed and it had killed the bacteria in his gut ... so.. a nice dose of phobies and he was right as rain. Unfortunately the small farmers learn from their mistakes. At least we learned a thing or two. The cyst today is the size of beach ball or bigger... wish us luck this time. The vet charged $125.00 to lance a "zit" ... I think I'm in the wrong line of work! |

![]() Another way of looking at it is $125 worth of experience!
Learning stockkeeping can be expensive at times, especially when we lose one, if you cannot find an experienced mentor in your area, post a picture with your post to help with the diagnosis. |
