Print This Page FMD Breaks Out in Myanmar
MYANMAR - An outbreak of foot and mouth disease has been reported in the country's cattle.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 11 November. According to the report, the outbreak started on 10 September.
The report states that the outbreak occured at a village in Rakhine State. A total of 350 animals were affected, while 741 animals showed signs of susceptibility to the disease.
The OIE has identified the source of the outbreak as:
- Contact with infected animal(s) at grazing/watering
- Fomites (humans, vehicles, feed, etc.)
- Airborne spread
- Contact with wild species
The outbreak area is located in a remote area and the index case could be earlier than this reported outbreak. The source of infection is inconclusive because local people use a different dialect and collecting information is hard. And there were memory recall biases during the investigation.
