Fears for North Wales abbatoir

WALES - With 35 per cent of lambs slaughtered in Wales going for export there are fresh fears over the future of a North Wales abattoir.

Directors of Cig Cibyn, at Caernarfon, say they will have no choice but to suspend operations until the foot-and-mouth ban is lifted.

With 70 per cent of the throughput destined for overseas customers, it will mean mothballing the plant and laying off workers for the second time in as many months.

Welsh Assembly Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones, said she was sorry that the directors of Cig Cibyn were having to take “this extremely difficult decision” as a result of the current restrictions resulting from the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Surrey.

“My officials will continue to liaise with the directors and with officials from Gwynedd County Council until the conditions for normal trading resume.”
