Government rules out foot and mouth jabs

UK - The Government's chief vet has ruled out vaccination against foot and mouth despite confirmation the virus had been found on another farm in Surrey, the third this month.

It was also confirmed that laboratory tests on pigs slaughtered on suspicion last Saturday at another Surrey farm have proved negative.

The latest case - the third this month and the fifth in the current outbreak - was found on a farm called The Klondyke, owned by Sally Hepplethwaite, near Egham Surrey, just a short distance from the two recent cases.

It emerged during routine tests of all herds within the 3km protection zone set up after cattle were discovered with the disease last week in Milton Park Farm, near Egham and Stroude Farm, near Virginia Water.

Those animals all had the same strain of foot and mouth disease that leaked from the Pirbright animal health complex ten miles away and infected two herds of cattle.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said it was likely that that strain is behind the latest case.
