AUSTRALIA - The federal government is considering watering down its tough policy on mad cow disease in a change that could allow the first beef imports from disease-affected countries. The move would also relax domestic consumption rules in the event of a disease outbreak. The beef industry wants the government to overturn current regulations which would ban all beef from domestic sale if Australia recorded a single case of the brain-wasting cattle disease. Australia, which remains free of mad cow disease, also bans beef imports from countries which have recorded cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), including the United States and Canada.To continue reading this article please click here
