Province Compensates for Mad Cow Crisis

CANADA - Calling it the last bailout livestock farmers will see in the post-BSE industry crisis, the Alberta government unveiled a $356-million recovery plan yesterday.

It will see ranchers, meat packers and other cattle owners getting an average of about $100 per head, with each cheque based on a feed-cost allocation.

The first cheques amount to $150 million, and will be issued immediately.
