Canadian cattle ban pushed

PORTLAND - A U.S. ranchers group made a last-ditch legal appeal yesterday for a ban on the import of Canadian cattle.

The Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, or R-CALF, argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that new information required reconsideration of the case.

R-CALF had already been rejected once by the appeals court, and a Montana judge refused in early 2006 to overturn that decision.

The Montana-based group succeeded in delaying the resumption of the beef trade after Canada's first mad cow case was discovered in May 2003.

R-CALF is still fighting for a total ban, even as the U.S. Department of Agriculture works on a new rule to reopen the border to older cattle and beef products.
