Events Hit by Delay to Bluetongue Status Changes

UK - The unexpected delay this week in extending the Bluetongue Protection Zones further, has impacted at least two scheduled events – the Royal Cornwall Show and the official opening of Rugby Farmers Mart’s new Royal showground site.

With Cornwall and Warwickshire remaining Surveillance Zones instead of becoming protection zones it meant only cattle, sheep and goats from within Cornwall could be moved to and from the show.

Cattle and sheep numbers at this week’s Royal Cornwall Show fell well short of last year (pictured) because of a last minute hold-up in the Bluetongue Protection Zone roll-out.

Organisers said sheep entries were hardest hit as a large number come from outside the county, particularly from Devon.

In the cattle section of the 569 entries received around 300 were able to travel to the show.
