According to an immediate notification sent to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) yesterday, the presence of the FMD virus (serotype O) was initially observed on 5 September and confirmed on Sunday (9 September) after pathogen isolation on cell culture and real-time PCR tests were conducted at the Kimron Veterinary Institute's Foot and Mouth Disease Laboratory. Both tests resulted positive.

According to the report sent to the OIE, a herd of 200 free-ranging beef cattle showed signs of susceptibility, out of which ten animals were found to have been affected by the FMD strain. The OIE reports that the herd was vaccinated in December 2017.

Some of the control measures that have been applied in response to the outbreak include:

  • Movement control inside the country,
  • Quarantine,
  • Zoning, and
  • Vaccination permitted (if a vaccine exists).

None of the affected animals have received any form of treatment.

Some of the measures to be further applied are:

  • Vaccination in response to the outbreak(s),
  • Surveillance outside containment and/or protection zone, and
  • Surveillance within containment and/or protection zone.

While the source of the outbreak remains inconclusive, the OIE reports that the epidemiological investigation is ongoing.
